The Post-Halloween Hack Every Parent Should Know

Some of the best parenting tips don’t come from books or blogs — they come from other parents. A few years ago, a friend casually mentioned to us that she always goes shopping right after Halloween to scoop up costumes on clearance. At first, I thought, why would I buy Halloween costumes after Halloween? But then she explained:

“They make the perfect dress-up clothes — and they’re a fraction of the price.”

We decided to give it a try, and let me tell you — best decision ever.

The day after Halloween, we headed to a few stores and sure enough, the costume racks were picked over but still full of treasures — all marked down 70–80% off. We grabbed armfuls of costumes in all kinds of sizes and characters. Princess gowns, superheroes, animals, even a pirate costume or two. Some of them were too big for our girls that year, but we figured they’d grow into them — and they did.

Fast forward a few years, and those clearance-rack finds have turned into some of the best playtime memories. Our girls have spent countless hours dressing up, creating little plays, pretending to be different characters, and inviting us into their imaginative worlds.

It’s amazing how a few $5 costumes have provided years of entertainment — way more than any expensive toy we’ve ever bought. And honestly, watching them run around in mismatched costumes, giggling and coming up with their own little storylines, has been just as fun for us as it has been for them.

If you have kids who love playing dress-up, do yourself a favor and hit the stores in early November. Buy a mix of sizes, think ahead, and let your kids grow into them. It’s one of the simplest, most budget-friendly ways to spark hours of imaginative play — and it might just become one of your favorite family traditions.
